A Family Favorite Main Dish

Meat Loaf

Heat oven to 350°

3 slices of soft bread broken in pieces
1/2 cup milk
1 egg
1 1/4 teaspoons salt
1/4 cup minced onion
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 1/2 lbs. ground beef

Combine the first 6 ingredients together in a bowl. Mix in the ground beef. Form the mixture into a loaf and place in a 9 inch loaf pan. Bake 1 hour. This makes 6 to 8 servings.

To make the loaf fancier, try one of the following ideas:

Toppings:Spread 3 tablespoons catsup or chili sauce over the top of the loaf before baking.

Frosted:When loaf is baked, frost the top with mashed potatoes. Sprinkle with paprika and broil until golden.

Recipe for Haystacks

I thought I would take the time to share some of my favorite recipes with you. The following recipe is an old one that I got from a friend many years ago. It is a favorite with my family when chocolate is what they want. I hope you enjoy it too.

Haystacks

Ingredients:
2 cups sugar
1/2 cup butter/marg.
1/2 cup milk
1/3 cup cocoa
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/3 cup crunchy peanut butter
3 cups Quaker Oats

Directions:

Mix the first five ingredients in a boiler. Bring to a rolling boil over medium heat stirring constantly. Boil the mixture for two minutes (still stirring) and then remove from heat. Add the peanut butter and oatmeal. Stir to mix and drop by spoonfulls on parchment paper. Allow to cool and enjoy.

Options: You can decrease the oats by half a cup and substitute half a cup or a little more of shredded or flaked coconut.
